Paulo’s Acapulco Trip

Paulo’s Acapulco Trip

October 11th, 2009 by Mike Quilliam

I just recently got back from Acapulco, Mexico where I was competing and teaching a skim camp. The trip was sick. I got some good waves with warm water and all the locals were more than excited. I was interviewed by the local and national news both days of the contest. I took what seemed like hundreds of photos and signed a million different things down there. It was great to be so welcomed and appreciated. It was also cool to see the sport growing down there. I finished in first place which was just the icing on the cake for me. Attached are a few shots of the event that I thought you would enjoy.

Thanks for your support.

Art School by Sean Tully

Art School by Sean Tully

October 11th, 2009 by Mike Quilliam

Sometimes art school gets a little weird. If you spend excessive amounts of time reading and listening to people’s opinion on art theory, you’ll begin to rethink that grad school notion you were playing with. After all, how are you suppose to write a 3500 word paper on Clement Greenberg’s “Art and Objecthood”, when the East Channel Buoy reads 7 feet at 14 seconds. It’s just not gonna happen. Seth De Roulet always calls early when he knows my wine habits from the previous night have seduced me into a coma like state of bliss. “Tully, get your act together. I’m there in fifteen. You better not lag. It’s gonna be fun”, he remarks as I begin acquaint myself with a new day. I know that though my bed is warm, I will find great pleasure in sneaking a few breakers before the members S.U.P. and M.M.A. saturate the line up. These gangs have been known to create heaps of disturbance in the local line ups and I often try to avoid them. This is precisely why Seth and I have aligned ourselves with an early morning strike at an undisclosed location near the Ventura County coast. Fall is the best time of year to pursue such wave fantasies in Southern California. Optimal seasonal conditions make for rewarding early morning sessions. I swear the air even smells better during this portion of the year. The off shores funnel down the canyon grooming the each lip providing ideal nasal ride conditions. The water stills lingers with warmth as Autumn takes hold. It’s the start of a beautiful day in October.

Max’s Puerto Trip

Max’s Puerto Trip

October 9th, 2009 by Mike Quilliam

This August and September I had the opportunity to spend some time in Puerto Escondido with my good friend and photographer Michael Barrus along with a few other friends from San Diego. We scored solid waves for the majority of the trip, with a few short intervals of small ripple surf. When we weren’t out at Puerto, were exploring the different waves Mainland Mexico had to offer. We ventured down to Barra De La Cruz and also found our own secret spot. It was quite a treat to find our own beach with perfect spitting tubes and no one in sight! Now I’m back in San Diego surfing and keeping up with my studies at UCSD until the next contest or trip.
